Henry's Freedom Box
I recently was on scholastic buying books to read to my class for black history month and came across the book Henry's Freedom Box. Henry's Freedom Box was written by Ellen Levine and illustrated by Kadir Nelson. It won the Caldecott Honor award in 2008. Henry's Freedom Box is based on Henry "Box" Brown who mailed himself to freedom. The book could be used in a classroom in many different ways. It could focus on descriptive vocabulary and metaphors, as many are used in the story. It could also be turned into a writing prompt: What would you do to get freedom? The book is a beautiful story of a man who loved his family so much that he would do anything to be with them again. I am so happy to have come across a book that I can share with my students.
