Secondary Literacy Experience
My secondary literacy journey was not as laid-back as my experiences in elementary school. As a young girl, I had a difficult time adjusting to middle school and did not have many friends nor many teachers that I connected with. I remember my seventh grade reading teacher loving books and allowing us time in class to read for pleasure which I enjoyed. I was always the quiet child in class who sat in the back and read her book when she was finished with her work. I often felt unnoticed by teachers in middle and high school and can remember very few of their names, as I am sure they do not remember mine. What I remember most about English classes in middle and high school was having to give presentations or act out Shakespeare, neither of which I enjoyed. Most of the books that I read during those times were found at the library or given to me by my mom. I was able to read Little Women on my own during high school and it is still my favorite book to this day. My secondary education experiences have made it a goal of mine to make every child in my class feel important and noticed, as well as providing students with a variety of outlets to share information. Many children get nervous when having to get up in front of a class to give a presentation and giving them different options for a project may allow them to express themselves in a way they are more comfortable with.
We learn from both good and not so good experiences.
