Caldecott Winners

Owl Moon was illustrated by John Schoenherr and written by Jane Yolen.  It was the winner of the  caldecott medal in 1988. The book tells the story of a boy who goes owling with his father.  The words are so descriptive of sound and the boys thoughts yet with the pictures, the words come to life and you can feel the quietness that surrounds them.  I believe that Owl Moon is a picture storybook because the words and the pictures come together to create the story.

The Glorious Flight: Across the Channel with Louis Bleriot was written and illustrated by Alice and Martin Provensen.  It was the 1984 Caldecott winner.  The art in this book seems to be similar to watercolor painting.  The book tells the story of Louis Bleriot and his journey to become the first person to fly a plane over water.  In this book, the pictures also work together with the words to create the story.

Waiting was written and illustrated by Kevin Henkes and was the 2016 Caldecott Honor winner.  I would consider this book to be a picture storybook because the pictures are essential to understanding the story.  In the story, five toys are all waiting for different things.  They sit on a shelf inside the window waiting for different things to happen outside.  The illustrations display the things they are waiting for and at times the pictures are the only thing used for description.
