Poetry

Picture book:
This is the Dream by Diane Z. Shore and illustrated by James Ransom

Shore uses her poetic words to describe the before, during, and after of the civil rights movement.  She takes us through the Greensboro lunch sit-in, the march in Selma, and even highlights leaders who made a difference.  Using a combination of photos from the civil rights movement and his painted illustrations, James Ransome's illustrations work together with Diane Shore's powerful words to show readers the hard times and work it took to achieve equal rights for black Americans.  James Ransome's endpages add an extra umph to the book with their beautiful collages of words and photos.

Anthology:
Sweet Corn Poems by James Stevenson

Containing 28 different poems written by James Stevenson, this anthology is fun and whimsical.  Some of his poems are concrete poems that seem as if the words are moving and some are accompanied by a simple watercolor illustration.  Most of the poems have an outdoor setting and characters that are children.  Stevenson uses color words and descriptive words to provide his poems with imagery.  Words such as, "glisten", "drip", and "pale gray woods" help readers imagine the setting in their minds.  The sweet and fun poems makes the book the perfect spring or summertime read.
